Apprenticeships: Not just for plumbers!

Looking to find out more about apprenticeships and your own career development? Then you are in the right place.

When I finished Year 11, embarrassingly many moons ago the iPad wasn’t even a thing never mind the idea of doing an apprenticeship. Now there are so many apprenticeships available to anyone over the aged of 16, who isn’t currently in education and lives in the UK.

Everyone thought if you were doing an apprenticeship you were off to be a bricklayer, plumber or hairdresser – that was the extent of the list. You would do it one day a week at a local college, a level 2 qualification is all you could get.

However, there has been a massive push by the government over the last few years for all sorts of apprenticeships to come about which I think is exactly what young people needed. Not everyone is suited or wants to continue their studies and the apprenticeship schemes mean you can learn and start earning straight away – the best of both worlds!

An example of types of industries that have apprenticeships include:

  • Aerospace
  • Accounting & Finance
  • Sales
  • Marketing & Digital Learning
  • Manufacturing
  • Project Management
  • Computing & Software Development

And these are the ones released just this week! There are so many to choose from and hopefully I will be able to setup a newsletter soon that will send out weekly updates about all the live vacancies. Let me know if that is something you would be interesting in receiving!

Different levels of apprenticeship…

There are now four different levels of apprenticeship, all with their own typical entry requirements.

Intermediate (Level 2)5 GCSES at a pass grade
Advanced (Level 3)2 A Levels at a pass
Higher (Level 4)Foundation degree and above
Degree (Level 5)Bachelors or Masters Degree

How do I apply?

The best place I have found when looking for an apprenticeship is on the government website

Here you can filter by level of study, local area and even what entry grades are needed.

Companies can also advertise on their own sites too so make sure you keep an eye out for this.

There are also conferences that you can go to. Here you can meet employees from these companies and find out what apprenticeships they have to offer. Find out more here.
